Civil War Union Brevet Major General. He was commissioned as Major of the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry on October 2, 1862, but held that duty for only a month before he was transferred to the 3nd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
